Supermarkets display chilled items such as juices and cheeses in open cases for easy access by customers but this arrangement also allows cold air to escape.
In a bid to rein in such energy wastage, the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) hopes to get supermarkets to use, say, display cases that are opened only when a shopper wants a specific item.
The use of energy-efficient equipment is one of the criteria in the construction regulator's new Green Mark certification scheme for supermarkets.
In a typical supermarket, refrigeration accounts for up to half the total energy used, but with the right equipment, it can cut its energy use by 10 per cent or more.
