Good progress made on oil spill near Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal: MPA

Good progress has been made in containing and cleaning up the oil spill as a result of a collision between two bulk carriers on Tuesday, said the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) in an updated statement release on Tuesday.

There is no further spillage of fuel oil from the damaged carrier Oriental Pioneer, that collided with Bahamas-registered bulk carrier Atlantic Hero at about 5.30am about 6km off Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal earlier in the morning. No one was injured. Vessel traffic in the Strait of Singapore and port operations was also unaffected.

Oil dispersants were used to break up the oil slick in the waters and as of 5pm, no significant patches of oil were sighted.

In total, 11 patrol and anti-pollution crafts and some 100 personnel from MPA and oil spill response companies have been deployed for containment and clean up efforts. A helicopter was also deployed to conduct aerial surveillance of affected waters. Investigations into the cause of the cause of the accident are ongoing, added MPA.
