Commuters will be able to travel for free on stage one of the Downtown Line (DTL) when the six-station line opens on Dec 22 up till Jan 1.

The Land Transport Authority said this is to encourage commuters to experience and familiarise themselves with the new 4.3km line, which comprises Chinatown, Telok Ayer, Downtown, Bayfront, Promenade and Bugis stations.

Separately, the Public Transport Council has approved the fare structure for the DTL, which will be the same as fares for travel on the North-East and Circle lines. For instance, it will cost $1.50 to travel 4.3km on a standard ticket.

An open house for the new stage of the DTL is held on Saturday, with events and activities planned at Bugis, Chinatown, Telok Ayer and Downtown stations. Commuters will be able to visit the stations and ride the trains for free from 10am to 6pm.
