Ex-HP vice president fined $80,000, jailed 2 weeks for graft

When he was an operations director of Hewlett-Packard Singapore, he accepted shares in a firm that supplied logistic services to his department without informing his company. In return, Susilo Gani Tandjung, 49, continued to award business to Servlink Global Services (SGS).
He was sentenced on Friday to two weeks' jail, fined $80,000 and ordered to pay a penalty of $192,481, which is the total amount of bribes he accepted from Hengky Oeni in May 2004. Tandjung, who is also known as Gan I Fung, had pleaded guilty on Jan 3 to corruption.
The Singaporean was left HP in October 2007 to start his own business.. He was then the vice president of supply chain operations at the technology firm and earning $28,000 a month.
Arguing for a lighter sentence, Tandjung's lawyer, Ms Melanie Ho, pointed out that her client did not solicit the bribes. Oeni had simply offered him a five per cent share of SGS. In reply, Deputy Public Prosecutor Edward Ti said that Tandjung understood that the bribe was for him to continue awarding contracts to SGS.
