Esplanade's rentals have not increased in a decade

THE Esplanade's rental rates to local arts groups has not increased since the venue opened 10 years ago, Minister of Culture, Community and Youth Lawrence Wong disclosed in Parliament today.
But he also acknowledged that other venues such as the Drama Centre have upped their rental charges "from time to time", stressing that they did this to cover increasing costs and not for profit.
He was responding to a question by Nominated Member of Parliament Janice Koh on whether the Government could do more to help local arts groups offset venue rental costs.
She asked if public companies set up by the Government such as the Esplanade and the Old Parliament House were under pressure to profit or break even from running their theatre venues.
