Elderly man is third person to die of dengue this year

An 86-year-old man has died of dengue fever, making him the third fatality from the mosquito-borne disease this year.

He died earlier on Tuesday despite receiving blood transfusions and supportive therapy at Khoo Teck Puat Hospital.

The Ministry of Health and the National Environment Agency said in a statement that the person had turned up at the hospital's emergency department on Saturday with fever, and was found to suffer from low blood pressure.

He was subsequently admitted and diagnosed with dengue shock syndrome, a dangerous condition where the body's organs start to shut down.

For his case, his kidneys failed and there was inflammation of the liver.

The dengue outbreak showed no signs of abating with some 842 cases reported last week, up from 810 the week before.
