Efforts stepped up in Hougang against dengue

With more than 100 cases of dengue fever, Hougang is the new hotspot for the mosquito-borne disease.

To clamp down on the spread, the National Environment Agency (NEA) has sent 150 officers to comb the area in a four-day mass operation.

Earlier today, Minister from the Prime Minister's Office Grace Fu also did her bit to shore up awareness, along with MP for the Punggol South ward Gan Thiam Poh.

They visited homes of Block 558 at Hougang Street 51, which lies within the area where the highest number of people fell sick.

Already, NEA officers have found 66 breeding spots during their inspections in Hougang since Jan 23, when the first cluster emerged there.

The area now has seven active clusters with 109 infections - second to Telok Kerau, which has 123 people who are now down with dengue.

Islandwide, there are 31 clusters of dengue fever, with nearly 200 new cases reported this week.
