The national water agency, PUB, will improve flood protection in Bukit Timah by widening and deepening the Bukit Timah 1st Diversion Canal.

A spokesman for the PUB said on Wednesday that the expansion will be carried out in three phases, with the first phase commencing in October, and the entire project to be completed by 2016.

He added that the upgrading works will increase the drainage capacity in the upper Bukit Timah catchment by 30 per cent to further alleviate floods along Bukit Timah Road and protect the upper Bukit Timah catchment against more intense storms.

Measuring 3.2km, the Bukit Timah 1st Diversion Canal, completed in 1972, serves the upper Bukit Timah catchment of areas such as Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Beauty World Plaza, Bukit Timah Shopping Centre and Sime Darby Centre.
