KOREAN consumer electronics giant Samsung and Japanese imaging specialist Canon notched the most wins yesterday at an event honouring the best in technology products and games.
Samsung bagged seven accolades while Canon netted six at the second annual DL Awards, which focuses on products launched in the preceding year.
Digital Life (DL), the weekly tech magazine of The Straits Times, gave out 48 awards across 24 categories for items such as laptops, cameras and smartphones.
Each category had two prizes - the Editor's Choice, decided by the DL editorial team, and the Readers' Choice, determined by the more than 300,000 online votes received over two weeks.
The winners were announced yesterday at the St Regis Hotel after The Straits Times' inaugural Digital Life Forum 2013 entitled Thriving Technopreneurship: Can Singapore Make It Happen? Courts was the presenting sponsor for the event.
Samsung won five awards for smartphones, one for laptop and a seventh for tablet.
Samsung Asia's vice-president of sales and marketing Irene Ng said: "We won in more categories this year and this shows consumers see Samsung as a manufacturer of electronics and cellphone devices."
The six awards picked up by Canon were for its cameras, from mainstream to high-end.
Canon Singapore's senior director and general manager Andrew Koh said they are an endorsement "from consumers who feel we make the best cameras".
Apple was the Readers' Choice winner in the Best Overall Smartphone category. It also took three awards for tablets.
First-person shooter game Halo 4, which won both the editor's and readers' hearts in the Best Shooter category, also snagged the Readers' Choice prize in the Best Overall Game category.
In the Most Innovative Product category, readers chose the Xbox Smartglass app while the DL team went for the TactSlider Tornado.
The Smartglass app allows users' phones or tablets to be used as a secondary screen of the Xbox360 and to control the game console. The TactSlider Tornado, a tiny plastic disc, becomes a mini joystick for game apps when it is stuck on a touchscreen device.
