BEIJING - Singapore, being friends of both China and the United States (US), does not wish to see their relations worsen and end up having to pick sides, said visiting Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

Describing China-US ties as the most important bilateral relationship for both countries and for the world, Mr Lee pointed out how China is a rising power whose action affect other countries while the US is an established power whose presence has boosted regional prosperity and security.

Thus, Singapore hopes their relations flourish as the region will be affected by developments in China-US ties, he added.

"We do not wish to see their relations deteriorate or be forced to choose one or the other. Singapore's influence is modest, but we will do what we can to foster good relations, through our statements and actions," said Mr Lee.
