On Friday, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) said its expenses for the Committee of Inquiry (COI) hearing came up to $4 million - less than the $5.9 million that rail operator SMRT earlier said it had incurred.

The LTA spokesman said the payments included the fees of lawyers and experts, and charges for laboratory tests.

Indicating that the expenses were necessary, the spokesman said: "The COI process was important to LTA.

"Credible experts and good lawyers were hired to ensure an optimal outcome.
