Civilian War Memorial gazetted under newly named division
The Preservation of Monuments Board has been renamed the Preservation of Sites and Monuments division to reflect its enlarged role of preserving not only buildings and monuments, but also sites that commemorate Singapore's heritage.
And the first structure gazetted as a national monument under the newly named division is the Civilian War Memorial, which is dedicated to the memory of civilians who perished during the Japanese Occupation from 1942 to 1945.
The gazetting was done on Thursday by the National Heritage Board (NHB), which oversees the division.
Yesterday, it said in a statement that the Aug 15 date was chosen to commemorate the ending of the Second World War in the Asia-Pacific on Aug 15, 1945.
