Dating agency owner Violet Lim is frequently approached by women in their mid-30s to 40s asking for help, but she is often at a loss because the men want younger women to start a family.

So she believes that Singapore needs more female role models to show the women that it is possible to have both a career and a family, so that they will start having children at a younger age.

When she made this suggestion at a dialogue on Singapore's population policies on Thursday night, she found the chairman of the panel agreeing with her.

Madam Halimah Yacob, the Minister of State for Community Development, Youth and Sports, said a negative picture is often painted of parenthood as stressful and costly. Instead, she said, mothers can influence their daughters that having a family and a career are not mutually exclusive.
