Married couples buying a HDB flat for the first time will also get to rent homes from HDB while waiting for their flats to be built.

Currently, this option is only open to first-timer married couples with a child no older than 16.

The expansion of the scheme is was announced by National Development Minister Khaw Boon Wan on Friday during the Parliament. He said the scheme can be extended to married couples without children as there were still some vacancies.

Some 1,150 flats were made available for rent last month. Mr Khaw said that about 200 applications have been received.

These units were located in Ang Mo Kio, Bedok South, Boon Lay and Dover Road. Rentals ranged from $900 for a three-roomer to $1,900 for a five-room unit.

More details would be made known by the HDB at its next BTO launch in April.
