A reading programme for pupils who suffer from dyslexia, a mild learning disability, will be extended to 22 more primary schools this year, benefitting another 340 Primary 3 pupils.

Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Education Sim Ann when making this announcement in Parliament on Wednesday, noted the programme which was first piloted in 20 primary schools last year, has shown encouraging findings. Pupils who participated in the programme have improved on their reading and speaking skills.

The Education Ministry will also extend an educational guidance service for parents who have children with special needs, he said. Parents will get advice on the available options and application process that support students with special needs. This service, piloted in 14 primary schools last November, will be offered at all primary schools by the end of this year.

Special education schools will also be encouraged to form their own parent support groups. Each school will receive a $2,500 in seed funding for this.
