Alexandra Hospital, originally scheduled to close in 2010, will continue to operate, at least until 2018.

"We will decide nearer 2018 on the future directions of Alexandra Hospital," Health Minister Gan Kim Yong told The Sunday Times on Saturday.

This is the second time the hospital, one of Singapore's oldest, has earned a reprieve. The first was in 2010, for an extension until 2014- 2015, when a new hospital in Jurong opens.

Given the critical shortage of hospital beds, the second extension for the sprawling, 74-year-old hospital was on the cards.
