32-year-old restaurant owner jailed 12 months for having sex with 15-year-old girl

A 32-year-old Malaysian was jailed 12 months on Tuesday for having underage sex with a 15-year-old girl. He is also the first of five men to be convicted for the offence against the same minor.

Jared Chan Yee Mun, who lives in Australia, had pleaded guilty to having sex with the girl at Changi Village Hotel on the evening of Oct 5, 2012. He was on transit in Singapore at the time. Two other charges of fellatio and committing an indecent act with the minor were taken into consideration.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Sharmila Sripathy-Shanaz said in mid-2012, the girl created an account on Blendr, a social networking application, as she wanted to make more friends. In September that year, she began communicating with Chan who learnt that she was 15 years old and in secondary school.

Soon after befriending one another, the conversations between the duo assumed a sexual undertone. He told her that he would be on transit in Singapore on Oct 5 and suggested that they meet for sex. She agreed.

That evening, she went to Changi Village Hotel at Netheravon Road where the offence took place. He left for the airport the next morning.

The incidents came to light after a church friend told the minor's father that sexually explicit photographs of the teen were circulating on the Internet.

On Monday, former advertising director Kwek Chuan Shan, 35, admitted to two of seven charges of sexual penetration of the same minor. He engaged in "bondage and discipline dominance and submission sadism and masochism'' or BDSM with her, and took photographs of her after assuring that he would not circulate them. His case has been adjourned to Jan 21.
