Sengkang, Hougang and Sembawang residents will have a new hawker centre in each of their neighbourhoods by 2017.

This brings the total number of centres that the Government will be building to 10 - all of which will be ready within the next five years.

Minister for the Environment and Water Resources Vivian Balakrishnan made this announcement on Saturday at the unveiling of the winning design in a four-month competition to build the new Bukit Panjang hawker centre.

"We are looking wherever possible, to co-locate hawker centres with community facilities," he said. "This will allow for more optimal use of land and will provide synergy in terms of both accessibility and the range of services which will be offered to the public."
