Philippines says China withdraws invitation for President Aquino
MANILA (AP) - The Philippine government says China has withdrawn an invitation to President Benigno Aquino III to visit a trade fair. The apparent snub comes as the two countries are locked in a territorial dispute.
A spokesman for the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs, Raul Hernandez, said in a statement on Thursday that Mr Aquino has decided not to proceed with the daylong visit to China-Asean Expo scheduled for Tuesday in Nanning.
He says Mr Aquino's decision follows China's request for the president to visit at a more conducive time.
Mr Hernandez says the Philippines will continue to abide by its position that bilateral relations can advance despite differences.
