THE Philippines on Thursday proposed holding a "defence dialogue" with Singapore, as the two countries seek to broaden 45 years of bilateral ties.

"I believe that strengthening defence and security cooperation between the Philippines and Singapore is key to maintaining regional stability," Philippine President Benigno Aquino said during a joint news conference with President Tony Tan Keng Yam.

Mr Aquino said he discussed with Dr Tan, who is on his first state visit to the Philippines, "our countries' defence and security cooperation, which includes high-level training, educational and intelligence exchanges".

In his statement, Dr Tan said Singapore shares "a common vision of building a strong, united and stable Asean community, and we will work closely to promote the common interests of the region".
