Philippine police hope to locate body of Malaysian kidnap victim
PETALING JAYA (THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK) - Philippine police will be looking for the body of a Malaysian kidnap victim, who is believed to have died of illness while being held hostage in Jolo, southern Philippines.
Mr Chong Wei Fei, 33, was kidnapped by five gunmen last November when he was working on an oil palm plantation off Lahad Datu on the east coast of Sabah. His younger cousin Mr Chong Wei Jie, 26, was also taken along by the Abu Sayyaf-linked gunmen.
Based in southern Philippines, Abu Sayyaf is a militant Islamist group notorious for kidnapping for ransom.
After nine months in captivity, the younger Mr Chong managed to escape and was spotted by a Sulu police officer yesterday morning, when he was walking along the highway in the Pasil village.
