Philippine police to be charged with murder of gang
MANILA (AFP) - Two Philippine policemen have been charged with murder over the shooting death of two gangsters in their custody, Interior Secretary Manuel Roxas said on Thursday.
Fourteen other officers were charged with perjury for trying to cover up the crime, Mr Roxas told a news conference.
The July 15 killings highlighted the huge problems of the 150,000-member force, widely considered one of the most corrupt government agencies in the Philippines.
"We don't know whether they were killed to silence them. The point is they were shot dead while in the custody of the police, and the first story (the policemen) gave turned out to be false," Mr Roxas told reporters.
