Philippine police arrest 6 in major drug haul at former US naval base
MANILA (AFP) - The Philippine police arrested six people and seized about US$46 million (S$57.8 million) worth of methamphetamine at a former United States naval base north of the capital Manila on Sunday, a police spokesman said.
The six were caught while loading travel bags and boxes at the port of Subic containing about 200km of the stimulant methamphetamine hydrochloride, said Chief Inspector Roque Merdegia.
Subic is a former US naval base that was converted into a free port shortly after the Americans pulled out in 1992.
Insp Merdegia put the street value of the seized drugs at 2 billion pesos (S$57.8 million).
