Mass opposition rally in KL ends peacefully
KUALA LUMPUR: A mass opposition rally at the iconic Stadium Merdeka in Kuala Lumpur drew over 40,000 participants, and ended peacefully on Saturday afternoon.
It was the first time authorities have permitted an opposition rally to be held at the stadium, the venue where Malaysia proclaimed independence in 1957.
“In our 55 years of independence, this is the most historic gathering. In our 55 years of independence, we have traversed very far,” Vice-president of Parti Islam SeMalaysia, Datuk Mahfuz Omar, said in a speech to the cheering crowd.
According to police estimates, there were 40,000 to 45,000 people in the stadium. No arrests were made at the event.
