Malaysia rape victim wants to go back to school

KOTA KINABALU (THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK) - The family of a 13-year-old rape victim hopes that she can move on with her life and go back to school now that the culprit has been sentenced to 12 years' jail and ordered to be given two strokes of the rotan.
Rights groups have lauded the sentencing, saying it sent a "loud and clear" message to would-be rapists.
An aunt who has been taking care of the girl said she was a bright student and dreamed of becoming a doctor.
"We just want her to get on with her life and achieve her dreams," said the sister of the girl's father outside the Sessions Court after 41-year-old restaurant manager Riduan Masmud was sentenced on Monday.
