Malaysia opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim will contest in the Kajang seat by-election, it was announced on Tuesday, a day after a surprise resignation of its state assemblyman.

Mr Anwar, however, denied that he will eventually take over the Selangor Menteri Besar post, currently held by Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim amid reports that some leaders of the Pakatan Rakyat (PR) coalition want Mr Khalid removed.

"It's pure speculation," Mr Anwar told local reporters in a packed press conference.

"Tan Sri Khalid will continue with his work while we focus on winning the by-election."
