KUALA LUMPUR - Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir - the son of former prime minister Mahathir Mohamad - could be Kedah's next menteri besar, if the ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) wrests the state back from the opposition.
The deputy minister of international trade and industry will move from his parliamentary seat of Jerlun to the state seat of Ayer Hitam, Kedah BN leaders announced on Tuesday.
Mr Mukhriz had long been tipped as a frontrunner as the state's next leader. Kedah is the home state of Tun Dr Mahathir.
Kedah is currently held by the opposition Pakatan Rakyat. But in-fighting among the Parti Islam SeMalaysia (PAS)-led state government has weakened its grip on the state.
Meanwhile, former premier Abdullah Badawi will not defend his Kepala Batas seat in Penang. He is being replaced by Umno Youth information chief Reezal Merican Naina Merican.
Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Nor Mohamed Yakcop is also not defending his Tasik Gelugor seat in Penang. Information Minister Rais Yatim also said on Tuesday that he will not be contesting the polls.
