A former Umno vice-president and former Menteri Besar of Selangor on Monday joined Parti Islam SeMalaysia (PAS), a key party in opposition Pakatan Rakyat (PR).
Tan Sri Muhammad bin Haji Muhammad Taib confirmed speculation that he has left Umno to join PAS in a press conference, making him the most high-profile and senior Umno politician to have switched camps in recent years.
A veteran Umno member, Mr Muhammad, also known as Mat Tyson, was the Vice President of Umno and Rural and Regional Development Minister.
He also held the Selangor Menteri Besar position for 11 years, until 1997.
Selangor is Malaysia's richest state and a key battleground in the May 5 election, with the ruling Barisan Nasional coalition vowing to wrest it back from the PR.
"Only PAS can bring enlightenment," Mr Muhammad said to reporters after handing in his membership forms to the party's leadership.
"I have to support the party that can bring true guidance."
Mr Muhammad also criticised the BN for leading the country to a wealthy but morally problematic urban society, calling it "development without soul".
