KUALA LUMPUR: Former Malaysian prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said yesterday that he had no other leader in mind other than Datuk Seri Najib Razak to lead the country and Barisan Nasional.

Dr Mahathir, who remains an influential figure in Malaysian politics, had raised eyebrows when he told AFP in an interview that Prime Minister Najib could face a challenge in his Umno party if he failed to perform well at the upcoming polls.

"Of course, if he does not perform, there will be some necessity to switch horses," Dr Mahathir had said.

But asked yesterday to clarify if he meant Mr Najib should step down, Dr Mahathir said, according to Bernama news agency: "I don't have any candidate and I don't expect that to happen.".
