DENPASAR (AFP) - Indonesian prosecutors on Monday sought a one year prison term for a Japanese teenager charged with possession of a small amount of marijuana on the resort island of Bali.

The 17-year-old, a student at an international high school on the island, was arrested in August after police found 2.61 grams of the drug in his trouser pocket.

"The defendant has been proven guilty of drug abuse...we demanded the judges to sentence him to one year jail," Wayan Widana, a prosecutor, told reporters following a closed-door trial at the Denpasar district court.

"The defendant was a minor, and being polite during the trial, admitted his mistake and promised not to repeat it", he said.
