Incumbent Democrat retains Bangkok governor's seat

BANGKOK - Independent-minded Democrat Mr Sukhumbhand Paribatra, 60, has retained his post of Bangkok governor, defeating a ruling party challenger.

Mr Sukhumbhand led by about seven percentage points, according to an unofficial tally on the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration's website, Bloomberg said.

Challenger Mr Pongsapat Pongcharoen, 57, a political rookie was a ruling Puea Thai candidate.

Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra congratulated Mr Sukhumbhand on his win at a Puea Thai press conference. The Democrat has promised to work with Puea Thai "seamlessly".
