Fires in Indonesia's Riau province increasing, visibility down to 500m
JAKARTA (JAKARTA POST/ASIA NEWS NETWORK) - The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) said the number of hotspots - areas with burning land fires - in the country, particularly in Riau province, continued to increase.
"The hotspots have caused smoke that reduced visibility in Riau to 500 metres on Tuesday," Antara news agency quoted Mr Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, head of the data and information centre of BNPB, as saying in Jakarta on Wednesday.
He explained that fog had also contributed to the poor visibility.
The number of hotspots detected continued to increase from Tuesday through Wednesday morning. In Riau, 243 hotspots were found, in Aceh 75 and North Sumatra 74.
