Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, wife of Malaysian opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim, will replace her husband at the Kajang by-election, her party announced on Sunday.

Datuk Seri Wan Azizah was unveiled as the Pakatan Rakyat candidate for the March 23 contest, stepping in for Anwar for the second time in her life, news website The Malaysian Insider reported.

Anwar, who last month declared his intention to run for the Kajang seat, was disqualified from contesting after the Court of Appeal on March 6 overturned his acquittal for sodomising a former aide. He was sentenced for five years' jail.

In 1999, Ms Wan Azizah ran for Member of Parliament for Permatang Pauh after her husband, who was deputy prime minister from 1993 to 1998 and MP for the ward, fell from power when he was charged with corruption for interfering with police investigations into alleged sexual misconduct.
