NEW YORK (AFP) - United States stocks finished mostly lower on Tuesday as the aura of the Federal Reserve's new QE3 stimulus wore off and worries about company profits were heightened after FedEx cut its earnings outlook.

Downgrades hit the shares of Alcoa, AMD, and Abbott Laboratories, but losses were widespread on the trading boards.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average eked out an 11.69-point gain (0.09 per cent) at 13,564.79 in closing trade.

The S&P 500, a broad measure of the markets, lost 1.85 points (0.13 per cent) at 1,459.34, while the tech-rich Nasdaq dipped 0.87 point (0.03 per cent) to 3,177.80.
