CHICAGO (AFP) - United States (US) auto sales roared ahead in September, gaining 13 per cent from a year earlier and posting the best sales pace since March 2008, industry data showed on Tuesday.

Total industry sales came in significantly higher than expected in September at a seasonally adjusted, annualised rate of 14.94 million units, according to research firm Autodata.

That's up from a pace of 14.52 million in August and 14.09 million in July.

Asian automakers were the big winners in September as Toyota and Honda's sales continue to rebound from last year's supply shortages caused by the Japanese quake and tsunami. Chrysler also managed to post a double digit gain.
