Women dominate the stage in 8 Women and The Bride Always Knocks Twice
Two very different plays, the murder-mystery 8 Women and the quirkily existential The Bride Always Knocks Twice, will be training the spotlight on a stellar selection of Singapore's actresses.
The Theatre Practice's multilingual Bride makes its debut at the Drama Centre Theatre from March 22, and Sing'Theatre's adaptation of the French play 8 Women will open at the School of the Arts Drama Theatre on March 29.
In talking to both creative teams, one thing becomes clear: an all-female cast means a lot of talking, a lot of negotiation, and plenty of food for rehearsals.
Theatre director Kuo Jian Hong, 45, who is helming Bride, cites the recent testosterone-pumped local production of Twelve Angry Men with a laugh: "If those 12 angry men were women, they would order a lot of food and get to know each other first."
