Porsche 911 named Straits Times Car of the Year 2012

The new Porsche 911 is The Straits Times Car of the Year 2012. You are forgiven if you went "huh?".
With the majority of ST Car of the Year winners, it is easy to understand why they won. Each was an obvious game changer that busted convention or raised the bar for whatever qualities one looked for in a car.
Examples include the Volvo XC90 (2003), Honda Civic (2006), Volkswagen Scirocco (2009) and Range Rover Evoque (2011).
The 911, however, has always been an icon. So what makes the seventh-generation version of it so different - or special - that it clinched the coveted award, beating luminaries such as the Lexus GS, BMW 3-series and Subaru BRZ?
