The constant wave of coffee chains and indie joints opening may have hogged the limelight for the past three years, but new tea cafes are now stealing the show.

Three new Japanese cafes - Tsujiri Tea House at 100AM in Tanjong Pagar, Nana's Green Tea Cafe at Plaza Singapura and Maccha House at Orchard Central - have opened in the past month.

And for those who like aromatic chai or spiced tea from India, two-week-old Chaitime at AXA Tower in Tanjong Pagar is giving the drink a contemporary spin.

Owners note that diners here are still unfamiliar with the types of Japanese tea and chai, and are stepping up efforts to educate them about the variety available - everything from hot maccha to karigane (made with stems from the tea plant) and genmaicha (roasted brown rice tea).
