Watch out, Changi Airport: American rock band Mutemath is coming through customs with their illuminated mattress.

The Grammy-nominated act will play their first gig in Singapore on March 16 at the Esplanade, and will be armed with their trademark prop - an inflatable air mattress decked out in LED lights.

Frontman Paul Meany, who last year started using the mattress to crowd-surf or pass overhead from person-to-person during concerts, says: "Most of the time, when the crowd catches on, there's a nice figure-eight pattern going on. And I can sing the whole verse of the song and get back to the stage and go through the whole, 'Hurrah, we made it!'."

The 35-year-old singer-keyboardist has been knocked off the mattress by fans and fallen before, but views it as no more than an occupational hazard.
