CANNES, France (AFP) - Your mobile rings, and it's a text message: Do you fancy being the ringmaster at the world's glitziest movie festival, hosting ceremonies with a potential audience of millions, including the top names in cinema? That was how French movie star Audrey Tautou was invited to be maitresse de ceremonies for the Cannes Film Festival, which opens in the Riviera resort on Wednesday.

"The offer threw me off balance a bit," Tautou admitted in an interview with Agence France-Presse on Tuesday.

Tautou caught the world's imagination in The Fabulous Destiny Of Amelie Poulain as a pixie-faced waitress from Montmartre.

She is famously shy and self-effacing, and with the exception of the 2006 Da Vinci Code, in which she partnered Tom Hanks, has shunned Hollywood in favour of working in France.
