Quirky dates help singles relax

Dating agencies here are holding weird and wonderful events to help singles loosen up. They include individuals exchanging hand-written notes instead of talking, and karaoke sessions where blindfolded women pick men based on their singing.

Take Champagne JSG's Croon A Love Song event where women are blindfolded and the men are made to sing one-by-one. The women choose duet partners based on what they have heard and finish off the date with a duet competition.

Mr Todd Yap, a lawyer in his 30s, went for a session in September this year. He says: "In speed dating, there is this awkwardness if there is no chemistry between two people. Activities like karaoke are a welcome distraction from the tension of trying to impress one another."

The event has become so popular since it started last year, that it is now monthly, and nearly always fully signed-up with up to 18 participants.
