LOS ANGELES - The United States space agency Nasa has ticked off superstar Beyonce for using an audio clip from the 1986 Nasa Challenger explosion in her new song.

XO, a single from her latest self-titled album, opens with a six-second audio sample from the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster.

Then Nasa public affairs officer Steve Nesbitt is heard saying about the explosion: "Flight controllers here looking very carefully at the situation. Obviously a major malfunction."

A statement from Nasa on Tuesday read: "The Challenger accident is an important part of our history; a tragic reminder that space exploration is risky and should never be trivialised.
