More than a hundred people, including family, friends, former students and members of the theatre community, gathered to bid goodbye to the late theater director, actress and educator Christina Sergeant this morning.

The funeral mass at the Church of St Mary of the Angels in Bukit Batok was a contemplative affair. Prayers and hymns were sung, and hugs and smiles were exchanged behind tears and sniffles.

Theatre doyenne Shirley Smith, who co-founded the Actors Theatre Circle with Sergeant in 1989, gave a brief eulogy at the cremation service at Mandai Crematorium.

Sergeant, who was usually fit, had a heart attack last Saturday. She was rushed to hospital and died shortly after on Sunday morning.
