Literary discussion continues in over 100 book clubs in Singapore

As the Singapore Writers Festival comes to a close, discussions about writers and books will continue at over a hundred book clubs here.

These book clubs cater to all age groups, from children to retirees, and interests, such as classic literature and history. There are even book clubs for professional groups, such as taxi drivers and those in the hospitality industry. Meetings are held in libraries, community centres, cafes and even bars.

Many of these clubs have been set up with the help of the National Library Board's Read! Singapore initiative, started in 2005 to encourage community reading. Some book lovers like Ms Rachel Westbrook, 36, form groups on their own. Her book club, The Hungry Hundred, has over 900 members on its page.

Mr Mark Ho, 28, one of the group's members, says: "Sometimes, reading a novel alone can feel quite lonely, so it's nice to meet other kindred souls who are putting as much effort into understanding the novel as you are."
