He may be living in semi-retirement in Ipoh these days, but renowned cartoonist Mohammad Nor Khalid, better known as Lat, still has plenty to say about his profession.

The award-winning Malaysian artist, 61, says modern readers have become less sophisticated, as the modern sense of humour has become more vulgar.

"You got to be vulgar and rude to make people laugh. The old comic illustrator has lost his audience and also lost touch. So it's time for a new generation with a different taste, and they are taking over," laments Lat.

He adds ruefully: "My audience has grown old. Some of them are probably trying their best to tell their grandchildren to read the Lat books. It's just like me trying to ask young people today to listen to the Rolling Stones or the Beatles."
