The once sleepy corner of Telok Ayer Street at the McCallum Street junction is waking up, thanks to The Market Grill, a new restaurant opened by hotelier-restaurateur Loh Lik Peng.

It seats just 34 and does not take reservations, so you have to take your chances securing a table, especially during weekday lunches.

But it's worth the risk of being turned away because the simple menu of burgers and steaks has some good ideas. Most memorable is a cod fish burger that comprises grilled cod packed in a soft, fluffy bun.

Or try one of the steaks, which are reasonably priced from under $40 for a 200g piece of meat. The lobster is also very good value, at $42 for a whole live 500g specimen. You can have it either chargrilled whole or shelled and turned into lobster sliders with toasted brioche rolls.
