Construction works on Orchard Road affect shoppers, businesses

Singapore's premier shopping district, Orchard Road, now looks like a messy construction site with hoardings up at Somerset 313, Orchard Central, Tangs, Ion and The Heeren. Shoppers say the roads have become less pedestrian-friendly and retailers say their businesses have been affected.
Road barricades outside Somerset 313 and the covered walkway leading to Orchard Central are part of the construction works for the upcoming Orchard Gateway mall, due to open by the second half of this year.
As for the construction works on the other side of the road, an overhead bridge and an underpass from the new mall to the previous Orchard Emerald site are in the pipeline.
And the upgrading of the underground link between Tangs and Ion explains the hoardings at the two shopping malls, and The Heeren is renovating for the new Robinsons move-in.
