Conserved buildings get new lease of life in condominium projects

More property developers here are incorporating conserved buildings into their new residential projects.

At least six properties such as The Wharf Residences at Robertson Quay, Rezi26 in Lorong 26 Geylang and A Treasure Trove in Punggol are converting conservation shophouses or bungalows on their land into either clubhouses or residential units.

Once the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) has gazetted a building for conservation, property developers must restore its facade. But they have free rein over buildings' interiors. Going by sell-out sales, buyers are embracing the combination of old-world charm and spanking new properties.

Developers who spoke to Life! say that building around old properties does have its challenges, including ensuring that the old facades are not damaged during construction and making sure that the yester-year house does not look out of place within the modern development.
