Architect Tan Cheng Siong is against shoe-box living and explains that people need space to be themselves and to call their own.

The veteran architect is known for his large and iconic residential buildings such as Pearl Bank Apartments and Pandan Valley.

Earlier this month, Mr Tan was awarded this year's designer of the year award, at the President's Design Award, for his contributions to Singapore's residential landscape.
