86th Oscar nominations announced

The Oscar nominations this year favoured big, flashy films and big, flashy performances - as they do most of the time - but a few quieter films also made a mark.
Announced early Thursday morning in Los Angeles (9.30pm in Singapore), one of the films taking in the most nominations was the tale of big dreams and petty family squabbles American Hustle (10 nominations). The epic space survival movie Gravity ties with 10 nominations.
The more serious fact-based story of one man’s life in shackles, 12 Years A Slave nabbed 9 nominations, while the low-key dramedy about an elderly man’s journey to redeem a bogus sweepstake prize Nebraska picked up six nominations.
Trailing them is the loudest film of them all: The epic tale of excess The Wolf Of Wall Street, with five nominations.
